Coal ash is the waste left over from the burning of coal and oil to make electricity. Coal ash contains concentrated levels of contaminants like arsenic, mercury, selenium, chromium and cadmium that can damage the nervous systems and other organs, especially in children. Proper management of coal waste is critical in protecting public drinking water supplies and the health of our natural environment. Recent USEPA reports indicate that coal waste leaches hazardous pollution in much greater quantities than had been recognized previously.  Illinois currently ranks 8th in the country for generation of this harmful coal ash.
