Illinois Clean Water Action Alert for August 3, 2007

The Lieutenant Governor would like to thank everyone who signed the online
petition to save Lake Michigan from the increased pollution at the BP
Whiting refinery. This citizen action is sending a strong message to those
responsible that increasing pollution in our waterways is unacceptable. If
you have signed the petition, you are automatically added to Clean Water
Action Alert list. If you want to be removed, please refer to the bottom of
this message.

The Office of Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn periodically sends out Action
Alerts to provide information on meetings, news and action items, events,
and other useful information on issues of clean water, the Illinois River
Coordinating Council, Great Lakes, and other initiatives from Lt. Gov. Pat
Quinn.

Topics covered in today's Action Alert:
1.	Dam Safety Bill
2.	Rolling on the River 2007
3.	Living Lands and Waters River Cleanup
4.	2007 "It's Our River Day"
5.	Clean Water Tip of the Day

Dam Safety Bill

Yesterday, Gov. Blagoevich signed the dam safety bill (HB 33), which
advanced several of our initiatives on public safety at run-of-the-river
dams. The new law authorizes DNR to place signs and buoys to communicate
the dangerous conditions at dams. Also included is an enforceable exclusion
zone that will prohibit entry into dangerous areas.

As we reported to you several weeks ago, CDB, DNR, and the Lt. Governor's
Office have also completed a dam safety study that spells out proposed sign
standards, alternatives both temporary and permanent, and the cost of those
alternatives. These are significant steps in addressing the dangers of dams
and keeping our recreational public safe.

Rolling on the River 2007

The 2nd Annual Rolling on the River Environmental Expo and Marketplace will
take place Saturday, August 25th at the Hoover Outdoor Education Center in
Yorkville, IL. Last year was the first for the event and drew over 350
people and 57 sponsors and partners, raising $78,000. This year, the goal is
to have 500+ cyclists and raise $112,000. Total attendance expected to be
1000. The deadline for registration is August 10th.

See attachment for more details.

Living Lands and Waters River Cleanup

Living Lands and Waters is holding a cleanup in the Quad Cities area on
Saturday, August 18 from 9 am to 5 pm. This group has helped to clean our
nation's rivers over the past ten years, and they welcome anyone to get
involved.

To participate, call 309.496.9848, email tammy at livinglandsandwaters.org, or
visit their website at www.livinglandsandwaters.org.

It's Our River Day (IORD)

Saturday, September 15, 2007 is the 4th annual "It's Our River Day" (IORD).
IORD is a celebration of Illinois' waterways through education, conservation
and recreation. Over 50 events are currently on the schedule all over the
state, ranging from canoe trips to dam tours to river cleanups to
triathlons. It's not to late to plan an event and join in. Your event will
be posted on the Lt. Governor's website as an official IORD event and will
be an option for citizens in your area looking to celebrate IORD. For more
