Illinois Clean Water Action Alert for February 9, 2007

The Office of Lieutenant Governor Pat Quinn periodically sends out Action
Alerts to provide information on meetings, news and action items, events,
and other useful information on issues of clean water, the Illinois River
Coordinating Council, Great Lakes, and other initiatives from Lt. Gov. Pat
Quinn.

Characteristics and Reuse Potential of Illinois River Sediments

The Waste Management and Research Center, headquartered in Champaign, has
funded a number of projects in past years that examined the IL River and its
sediments.  More recently, WMRC has been looking at reusing IL River
sediments for beneficial purposes.  Pilot studies are ongoing in Chicago for
reuse as park land and planned with IL DNR for reuse on public lands.  WMRC
will be hosting a mini-conference on \"Characteristics and Reuse Potential
of Illinois River Sediments\" on Thursday, March 1.  It will be held from
10:00 am - 3:00 pm in the Warner Conference room at WMRC, 1 East Hazelwood
Drive in Champaign.

7th Annual Kaskaskia Watershed Association Summit

The Kaskaskia Watershed Association, INC is holding its 7th Annual KWA
Summit.  This summit brings together people throughout the watershed to hear
about the activities and needs in the watershed.  This year's theme is Water
-Quantity and Quality in the Kaskaskia River Watershed.  
The Summit will be held at the Knights of Columbus, 1471 in Carlyle,
Illinois on February 23, 2007 from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm.

Trail Grants 
Application Deadlines March 1: Local communities interested in applying for
bicycle path, recreational trails and off-highway vehicle grants to enhance
recreation opportunities can apply for assistance through the IDNR by March
1. Local government units authorized by law to operate and maintain land for
public recreation purposes are eligible to apply for the grants through the
state Bicycle Path grant program. Units of local government and
not-for-profit groups are eligible to apply for grants through the federal
Recreational Trails Program. Local governments, not-for-profits, businesses
and individuals may apply for grants through the state Off-Highway Vehicle
Recreational Trails program. All three programs have application deadlines
of March 1.

Illinois Conservation Foundation Grant Program 
Applications Due By March 31: The Illinois Conservation Foundation provides
grant funds to not-for-profit groups, organizations, and schools to assist
with habitat enhancement, environmental education and recreation projects.
The deadline to apply for the 2007 ICF Grant Program is Mar. 31. An
application form is available on the Illinois Conservation Foundation web
site at www.ilcf.org.

Wildlife Grants
Applications are now being accepted for two Illinois Wildlife Preservation
Fund grant programs administered through the IDNR Office of Resource
Conservation Division of Natural Heritage. The programs are funded through a
voluntary check-off designation to the Wildlife Preservation Fund on the
state income tax form. The Small Project Program proposals are open to all
persons and may address many types of projects including management, site
inventories, education or special equipment purchases. Individual proposals
are eligible for grants of up to $2,000. Proposals are also being accepted
for "Maintenance of Wildlife Rehabilitation Facilities That Take Care of
Threatened or Endangered Species Program" grants. This program is designed
to keep wildlife rehabilitation facilities that take care of threatened or
endangered species in a state of good repair necessary to provide safe and
sanitary conditions for wildlife being cared for in the facility and for
facility staff. Only persons who possess a current wildlife rehabilitation
license/permit issued by the IDNR and who have provided care for threatened
or endangered wildlife species during the 3-year period preceding the date
of their application qualify for grant funds. Individual proposals are
eligible for grants of up to $2,000. For application packets or more
information, call 217/782-2602, or e-mail DNR.SPECIALFUNDS at illinois.gov. The
application deadline is April 2, 2007 at 5 p.m.


Clean Water Tip of the Day

Buy environmentally friendly products and alternatives, free of harmful
chemicals (avoid chlorine, phosphates and solvents).
