BP Petition
The Lt. Governor would like to thank everyone who has already signed the
petition to keep BP from dumping more pollution into Lake Michigan. If you
have not already, please visit www.cleanwaterillinois.org and add your name
to the list of more than 2,000 people who have signed this petition urging
BP to keep the nation's largest freshwater resource from further pollution.
BP Resolution in Congress
The U.S. House of Representatives also passed a resolution urging BP to
reconsider dumping more pollution into the lake and expressing disapproval
in the way the Indiana Department of Environmental Management issued a
permit allowing BP to be an exception to normal practices. House
Congressional Resolution 187 passed overwhelmingly with a vote of 387-26.
The resolution is now in the Senate.
Illinois River Coordinating Council Notice
The Illinois River Coordinating Council (IRCC), a watershed-based
stakeholder organization chaired by Lt. Governor Quinn, will hold its third
quarterly meeting at Principia College in Elsah, IL on August 16, 2007 at 1
p.m. Please contact Jeremy Kruidenier (contact information listed above)
for a copy of the agenda or for more information.
Illinois River Management Conference
The 11th Biennial Governor's Conference on the Management of the Illinois
River System entitled "The Illinois River - Continuing our Commitment" will
take place from October 2-4th, 2007 in Peoria. Please refer to the
attachment in this email.
Illinois Conservation and Climate Initiative (ICCI)
In January 2006 Illinois became the first state in the U.S. to offer farmers
and other landowners the opportunity to earn and sell greenhouse gas
emissions credits by adopting various conservation practices through the
ICCI. The ICCI allows farmers and landowners to earn green house gas
emissions credits when they practice conservation tillage, plant grasses and
trees, or capture methane through the use of various methane capture
strategies, such as manure methane digesters. These practices keep carbon
out of the atmosphere while providing other environmental benefits such as
the creation of wildlife habitat and reduced run-off from fields. Presently
the program is accepting applications for Pool III, which will end September
14th, 2007. Those wanting information on the program or wanting to submit
applications can go to www.illinoisclimate.org.
Clean Water Tip of the Day
Dispose of chemicals properly. Do not pour them down a drain; save unused
chemical products for a hazardous waste collection event, or use them up!
