Island Rendezvous
June 10, 2007
10:00am - 4:00pm
The Forest Preserve District of Will County's annual two-day Island
Rendezvous, featuring the 18th-century fur trade era between voyageurs and
Native Americans. This special family event is free of charge.
Special this year is the reopening of Isle a la Cache Museum, which has been
completely renovated. Tours of this new facility will be available both days
of the Island Rendezvous.
Visitors to the Island Rendezvous can be transported back in time to the
year 1750. Dozens of voyageur and Native American re-enactors will be on
hand, and visitors can observe crafts from that era as they wander through a
voyageur encampment.
Other activities include a paddle dance, a daily "trader training" for
children to test brains and brawn, and a new, fiery competition pitting
neighbor against neighbor. A new feature of this year's Rendezvous is Native
American storytellers.
These activities are in addition to regular program features like the canoe
race, black-powder musket demonstration, and tomahawk throw. Live music from
that period will be performed by Cooper, Nelson, and Early; Celtic music by
Innisfree, and truly French songs by Trois Canard..
The Island Rendezvous is a perfect family program-colorful, educational,
lively, and inexpensive. The program and parking are free of charge, though
food and items will be available for sale.
