Dear Friends of Living Lands & Waters (LL&W)-

In case you haven't heard, LL&W is starting a new project to supplement our
current Riverbottom Restoration Project-its called "The MillionTrees
Project"!

In a nut shell (pun intended!), we are starting our own nursery to grow
native hardwood trees to plant back in the community and along the river
shorelines and islands. Our goal is to plant 100,000 trees in the next 2-3
years and 1 MILLION trees within the next 10 years. Why would we do this?
Lots of reasons, but most importantly to:

* create habitat and a needed food source for wildlife and birds

* reduce the amount of pollution entering our waterways

*         reduce erosion

*         increase overall biodiversity

* reduce the impacts of climate change

*         help regulate water temperature

*         improve air quality

*         increase aesthetics

The biggest challenge in making this happen is collecting the seed. Rather
than purchasing acorns, we are kindly requesting your help! Go out in your
neighborhood and involve your students, coworkers, customers, science
departments, family, friends, neighbors, churches, scout groups,
environmental clubs, ANYONE YOU KNOW.to help us collect acorns. At this
time, we are only requesting ACORNS (OAKS)! No pecans, walnuts, etc. The
best part is..If you wish, a certain percentage of those trees successfully
grown from your acorns, will be returned to you to plant in your yard, at
your work, at school, wherever you wish!

Just log onto:

information including Acorn Collection Guidelines, Collection Forms, Bag
Tags, and an Oak/Acorn Identification Guide to help you figure out what
species of oaks are around your neighborhood.

For specific questions regarding this project, please call Denise Mitten at
309.496.9848 or email her at milliontrees at livinglandsandwaters.org.

Thank you in advance for your help in this exciting and worthwhile project!

GO NUTS!
