Convincing the Candidate

On the campaign trail, James R. Thompson was known for fiscal conservatism and not supporting anything until he had seen it first.


After hearing of the Middle Fork, presented as roaring rapids slicing through East Central Illinois by his press contacts, Thompson was persuaded by conservationists and staffers to see the river for himself before supporting its preservation.


However confident the candidate may have been before his arrival, the Middle Fork had a few surprises in store for the future Governor.
