This summer, President Trump and Congress rolled back key parts of the Inflation Reduction Act – America’s biggest investment in clean energy. These setbacks are already threatening our country’s progress on climate change.
Here in Illinois, millions of families are already feeling the impact – spiking utility bills across the state are caused by peak energy demand pushing the limit of our grid’s capacity. Meanwhile, data centers are creating unprecedented demands on our grid, driving prices even higher. We can reduce these costs by building more capacity and reducing peak demand.
Illinois lawmakers have a chance to take action to face these challenges head-on. The Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability (CRGA) Act offers real, commonsense solutions to lower utility bills, make our power grid more reliable, and keep the clean energy transition on track.
What the CRGA Act does:
- Expands the grid’s capacity with clean, affordable resources like battery storage and renewable energy.
- Lowers our peak energy demand with an innovative virtual power plant program, time of use electric rates, and an expansion of energy efficiency programs.
- Builds and upgrades our transmission lines to prevent outages and ensure power is there when we need it.
- Provides rebates to help families – especially low-income households – cut energy costs.
- Ensures better planning for local power providers, giving a stronger voice to nearly one million Illinoisans served by rural electric cooperatives and municipal utilities.
