We wanted to provide an important update on the Mahomet Aquifer Carbon Sequestration ban, SB3968.
Today, the Senate Executive Committee held a hearing but unfortunately decided not to vote on the bill to delay action “in order to get it right.” But we already know what’s right – protecting the Mahomet Aquifer in perpetuity. This decision by Senate leadership is a significant setback to securing these critical protections.
Want to learn more? We will be hosting a briefing this Friday, November 15, at noon, to discuss the bill and what’s next. You can register here.
SB3968, introduced by Senator Faraci, is a key component of our efforts to secure Central Illinois’ drinking water. The Mahomet Aquifer serves as the sole-source water supply for nearly one million people across 14 counties.
Recent leaks at ADM’s carbon sequestration project in Decatur underscore the very real threat that carbon sequestration poses to the aquifer — a water resource with no viable replacement if contaminated.
SB3968 seeks to address these risks head-on by banning carbon sequestration projects through and under the Mahomet Aquifer and any future sole-source aquifers in Illinois. The goal is to prevent potential contamination that would leave Central Illinois communities without safe drinking water.
Moving forward we will need your support to hire expert witnesses, increase visibility and ensure every legislator hears from us on this topic. Please consider a donation today to give us the resources we need.
While the decision to delay SB3968 is disappointing, we are not deterred. Hundreds of you slipped in favor of these protections today and we are emboldened by your willingness to fight for our drinking water. You can continue to raise your voice to your legislators here today!
Thank you for standing with us in this fight. We’ll keep you updated on next steps and how you can help. Hope to see you Friday.
