We are facing a climate crisis that reaches every corner of the country.
Illinois, in particular, plays a large role in that crisis through its extensive coal mining operations. Illinois is the nation’s fourth-largest coal producer, and right now, more coal is being extracted here than 20 years ago. This is unacceptable at a time when we urgently need to transition to clean energy.
One critical decision stands before us. The Tennessee Valley Authority, the largest public power company in the country, is considering leasing over 20,000 acres of publicly owned coal beneath Illinois farmland to expand mining operations at Sugar Camp Mine. TVA has the rights to roughly 250 million tons of coal sitting beneath Illinois soil, and mining this coal would not only devastate our local environment, but also worsen the global climate crisis. We have until October 15 to make our voices heard. Join Prairie Rivers Network in urging TVA to leave this coal in the ground where it belongs.
