Today, Governor Pritzker has signed SB1723, the bill to protect the Mahomet Aquifer from carbon sequestration into law. In signing the bill, Governor Pritzker has shown that clean water always was, and always will be, a critical factor to building climate resilience across Illinois.
SB1723 protects our sole-source designated drinking water supply from risks related to carbon sequestration, passing unanimously in the Senate and with an overwhelming bipartisan majority in the House.
Communities across central Illinois depend on the reliable source of clean drinking water that is the US EPA designated sole-source Mahomet Aquifer. The designation means that our communities have no other economically viable alternative should the aquifer become contaminated.
Prairie Rivers Network and our partners will be celebrating this win and our legislators who got us here on September 9th at Prairie Fruits Farm in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Save the date! More information coming soon.
