A Call to Action for Central Illinois Businesses
The Mahomet Aquifer is the foundation of life and commerce in Central Illinois, serving as the primary drinking water source for over 850,000 residents and sustaining countless businesses. As a sole source aquifer designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it has no viable alternative. Simply put: if the aquifer becomes contaminated, there is no replacement.
Unfortunately, this irreplaceable resource is under threat. A growing number of carbon sequestration projects have raised serious concerns about water quality and safety. These projects, like the ADM pilot in Decatur, have already experienced leaks just miles from the aquifer’s boundaries, highlighting the risks of injecting carbon dioxide deep underground.
Why Your Business’s Voice Matters
Protecting the Mahomet Aquifer is about securing the future of Central Illinois’ economy and communities. Businesses like yours rely on clean, safe, and reliable water. Without it, livelihoods, industries, and families are at risk.
That’s why Prairie Rivers Network is inviting businesses across the region to join this critical effort to protect the Mahomet Aquifer.
How You Can Help
We are asking businesses like yours to take two important actions:
