Congressman Mike Bost
1109 Chestnut Street
Murphysboro, IL 62966
Dear Congressman Mike Bost:
As business owners, communities, and organizational leaders in Southern Illinois, we are deeply concerned about proposed cuts to federal funding for our national forests and public lands, as well as reductions in federal staffing that support these treasured places. Our region is home to the Shawnee National Forest, three U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Wildlife Refuges, and U.S. Army Corps lands at Rend Lake and they are essential assets to our economy, environment, and way of life.
Southern Illinois has long relied on the tourism and outdoor recreation industry, which contributes millions of dollars to our local economy each year. Visitors come to hike, camp, hunt, fish, relax, and experience the unique beauty of our forests, rivers, and wetlands. The businesses that serve them, hotels, restaurants, outfitters, and local shops, depend on well-maintained public lands and the dedicated federal employees who ensure their safety, accessibility, and ecological health.
Beyond economic benefits, these public lands provide invaluable ecosystem services. They protect water quality, reduce flood risks, and support diverse wildlife populations. Reducing funding and staff would jeopardize these benefits, impacting not just the environment but also industries like agriculture, which rely on clean water and stable ecosystems.
We urge you to oppose funding and staffing cuts that threaten the integrity of our public lands and the economic vitality of our region. Investing in our national forests and fish and wildlife areas is an investment in local businesses, jobs, and the long-term prosperity of Southern Illinois. We stand ready to work with you to find solutions that support both fiscal responsibility and the preservation of our shared natural heritage.
Sincerely,
Shawnee Trails Wilderness Outfitters, Inc.
